There's probably many devices with access to some of your business data. Phones, tablets and laptops; those issued by the business and personal devices. Devices used by a colleague, their partner and their children. Keeping track of all these devices is hard and many don't have multi-layered security; unlock an iPad to allow your kids to watch Disney and they also have access to all your email and documents.
You need to keep this data secure easily and automatically, and that's where Mobile Device Management (MDM) comes in. Part of Microsoft Endpoint Manager (a suite of Microsoft 365 tools to help secure access, protect data and manage risk), Mobile Device Management enables you to put a secure 'fence' around work data and apps on a device.
There has been a rapid growth in users having one device for both their work and personal lives. This can certainly makes life easier for users but can be a headache for business owners and IT administrators and often results in an IT policy based purely on trust.
Once configured by your Microsoft 365 administrators, MDM is automatically to applied to any device that attempts to log into the business Microsoft 365 account. Using Intune (part of Microsoft Endpoint Manager), MDM will check the device meets the company's security standards. Does it have a passcode enabled? Is it running the an up-to-date operating system?
Mobile Device Management keeps an inventory of devices that have access to your business data and allows you to remotely wipe all business data, control access to your Wi-Fi network or prevent access from overseas. For example, a colleague cannot use any device to access their Microsoft 365 account system even if they have a valid username and password.
