Encrypting your computer's hard drive keeps your data safe. It puts a second 'lock' around all the data that prevents it from being accessed even if the hard drive is removed and linked to another computer. Users often believe that a login password is sufficient to protect their data, but this is a low-level protection and relatively easy to circumvent.
"Many users may not realise the amount of sensitive information they actually have on their laptop. As a business, you have a legal obligation under GDPR to ensure that the information is held securely, not only to protect your own business but to protect your customers too," explains Chris Joberns, Strident's Managing Director.
Not only does encryption help you meet your obligations but if your laptop is stolen and the hard drive is encrypted, you are not required to report it to the ICO as a data breach.
BitLocker is Microsoft's encryption program that not only encrypts your hard drive but helps protect against unauthorized changes to your system from malware. It can be used as a standalone product or the latest version can be configured from within Microsoft's Intune device management software on Windows 10.
Once Bitlocker is set to run the encryption, you can continue to use your computer as usual, but you may notice a slight drop in performance while this happens. Once fully encrypted, the normal performance will resume.
Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based service that focuses on mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM). Using Intune, businesses can provide their employees with access to corporate applications, data and resources on almost any device, while helping to keep corporate information secure.
Intune is now part of Endpoint Manager. Find out more.
If your business uses Intune to protect computers, you can now set Intune to encrypt a computer's hard drive with Bitlocker. The encryption password is stored by Microsoft Intune to ensure the laptop can only be used by authorised users, keeping all your device management in one place.
