Mimecast Event: Discovering effective data management
We welcomed guests to our recent Breakfast Event, where the team at Mimecast talked through their range of business tools designed to keep organisations safe. The morning also gave attendees plenty of opportunity to network and speak with the Strident team.
The growing use of AI and the security issues it poses was obviously a hot topic. Mimecast noted that while many businesses may have an AI policy in place, most did not have the tools to implement and track that policy adherence.
By the end of the session, attendees had a deeper understanding of the risks highlighted below and the solutions available to them, from real-time email threat protection through to safeguarding data across collaboration tools and emerging AI use.
Email security that goes further than Microsoft 365
Mimecast's email filtering software builds on Microsoft 365's built-in protection, using AI and deep-scan technology to inspect URLs and attachments in real time. Threats don't always announce themselves straight away, and a link that looks safe when an email arrives can turn malicious minutes later. Mimecast's URL Protect keeps checking after delivery, so it can still block a link that goes bad after the fact.
Keeping email running when Microsoft can't
One of the biggest business benefits of Mimecast is Email Continuity. If the Microsoft mail server goes down, employees can carry on sending and receiving emails through the Mimecast dashboard or mobile app, so a server outage doesn't mean a communications blackout.
Protecting your intellectual property
Mimecast Incydr protects intellectual property such as client lists, designs, pricing strategies, and strategic plans from accidental leaks or intentional theft by departing employees. Unlike traditional Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools, which often rely on "block-and-stop" methods that can frustrate staff and get in the way of legitimate work, Incydr focuses on visibility. It can tell the difference between everyday collaboration and genuinely high-risk activity, so protection doesn't come at the cost of productivity.
Tackling Shadow AI and agentic risk
It was Incydr's handling of Shadow AI and agentic risk that drew the most interest from attendees on the day. As staff increasingly turn to AI tools and browser-based assistants without IT's knowledge, sensitive data can end up pasted into places it was never meant to go, and autonomous AI agents introduce a new category of risk that traditional security tools were never built to watch for. Incydr's visibility-first approach extends to this activity too, giving businesses a way to see where AI tools are being used and by whom, without slowing staff down or resorting to outright bans that people quietly work around anyway.
Data governance across collaboration tools
Attendees also saw high value in the data governance elements covered on the day. As collaboration platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams have become embedded in daily work, they've also become a growing source of compliance and data loss risk that conventional security tools weren't designed to address. Mimecast brings visibility and control to this collaboration data, using custom detection rules and AI-driven context to flag policy violations and sensitive information as they happen, and to speed up the investigations that follow when something needs a closer look.
